VFX Mechanic is me, Mike Boden. I am a Visual Effects Artist specializing in compositing for film, tv, commericals. I chose the name “VFX Mechanic” as I was entering my career into Visual Effects (VFX) and wanted something that wasn’t too cheesy or obvious and made sense to the VFX industry. The word mechanic means, of or relating to manual work or skill. Typically a mechanic is a craftsman or technician who uses tools to build or repair machinery. Many mechanics are specialized in a particular field. Just as your auto mechanic works on your car, with his tools to repair or improve your car. I sit at a desk working on sequences of images to repair or improve the images given to me . I consider my self to be an artist technician as visual effects is a blur of computer skills, traditional art and photography. I also found the word mechanic to be appropriate as in creative and entertainment worlds directors and producers have a saying that keep VFX artist busy to no end. The saying is “We’ll fix in post”. If you read that and chuckled then you are probably working in the indrustry. As for the rest of the you, the lost joke is that the quick pace of a film shoot today even with all the pre production planning, will still have mistakes in the frames that will need to be fixed when the images go to post production. Fixing things in post is the lifeblood of the VFX industy. Visual effect is more than just fixing mistakes made during filming. Visual effects are just like custom body shops. A custom body shop can create and upgrade your car to make it look unique and have it’s own personal style. Visual effects artist create beautiful images that give a unique style or enhance a storyline. The visual effect maybe the storyline, we’ll save this topic for another day. I truly see myself as a mechanic of visual effect. I’m just one guy fixing things in post and making movie magic.
